Music, memories, social connection, and creative expression in a safe and welcoming environment.

Music Memory Cafe Program

In 2023, the Genevieve N. Johnson Senior Center was the recipient of a one-year grant from the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities (CAH) to develop its uniquely designed Music Memory Cafe initiative. The grant has proven to be an extremely successful model that the GNJ Senior Center has continued to expand through generous grants from both the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and The Washington Home.

A Safe Space for Music and Connection

The GNJ Senior Center's Music Memory Cafe is uniquely designed to serve as a dedicated safe space for older adults dealing with memory loss who are also retired musicians. The program is tailored specifically for retired jazz musicians and older adults dealing with memory loss.

Located at 4817 Blagden Avenue, NW, Washington, DC, the Music Memory Cafe offers a judgment-free space where participants can play and perform musical instruments while socializing with their peers.

The Music Memory Cafe combines active music participation, shared experiences, and coordinated senior support.

Performance

The DC Rhythm City Band

Rather than just listening to music, participants form an active performance group known as the DC Rhythm City Band. Under the leadership of Artistic Music Director Bill Davis, the band practices together, performs at local community events, and offers a concert series throughout the District of Columbia.

Creative Expression

Songwriting & Discussions

Guided by a dedicated team of clinicians and volunteers, seniors participate in weekly sessions to reminisce about their favorite tunes, share historical music experiences, and collaboratively write original music.

Senior Support

Integrated Care

The program is woven directly into the Genevieve N. Johnson Senior Center's wider services, including recreational socialization, nutritious meals, caregiver support services, and coordinated transportation support for eligible DC residents.
